Al Sultan Restaurant
Today I discovered Al Sultan Restaurant, a hidden gem that offers an authentic local dining experience without breaking the bank. This unassuming establishment delivers genuine Middle Eastern cuisine in a no-frills setting that puts the focus squarely on the food.
The meal began with freshly baked Arabic bread served in a wicker basket, accompanied by classic mezze including creamy hummus drizzled with olive oil and a robust mutabal (eggplant dip). The simplicity of these starters belied their quality - each dip was clearly house-made with a depth of flavor that mass-produced versions simply can’t match.
The menu offers a variety of traditional Middle Eastern dishes, but the lamb chops came highly recommended by the staff. This recommendation proved to be spot-on. The meat was minimally seasoned, allowing the natural flavor of the lamb to shine through. While some might prefer more aggressive spicing, this approach showcased the excellent quality of the meat itself - tender, juicy, and with that distinctive lamb flavor that no amount of seasoning could improve upon.
We also tried some of their grilled kebabs and arayes (meat-stuffed bread), which were cooked to perfection over open flames. The charred edges and smoky flavor added a wonderful dimension to these traditional dishes. A standout was their version of arayes - crispy on the outside with juicy, well-seasoned meat inside.
What makes Al Sultan particularly appealing is its value proposition. The portions are generous, the prices reasonable, and the quality excellent. It’s clearly a place where locals eat - always a good sign when looking for authentic cuisine - and the atmosphere is casual and welcoming.
The restaurant itself isn’t fancy, with simple wooden tables and basic decor, but it’s clean and comfortable. The service was efficient and friendly, with staff happy to explain dishes to newcomers to this cuisine.
For those looking to experience authentic Middle Eastern food the way locals enjoy it, Al Sultan Restaurant is a must-visit. The lamb chops alone are worth the trip, showcasing how quality ingredients need minimal intervention to shine. This unpretentious eatery delivers a genuinely satisfying meal that reflects the true culinary traditions of the region.

Dragon Bao Bao Rotating Mini Hot Pot
Today I had the pleasure of visiting Dragon Bao Bao Rotating Mini Hot Pot, a unique and incredibly satisfying dining experience that offers a fresh twist on traditional hot pot. The concept here is ingenious: rather than a single large shared hot pot in the center of the table, each diner gets their own personal mini hot pot, while ingredients rotate past on a conveyor belt system.
The restaurant operates as an all-you-can-eat buffet, but with a surprisingly affordable price point that makes it an outstanding value. Despite the budget-friendly cost, the quality and variety of ingredients were impressive. The conveyor belt continuously delivered fresh vegetables, various types of mushrooms (including brown shimeji), thinly sliced meats, seafood, tofu, and noodles - all neatly arranged in color-coded plates or containers.
What makes Dragon Bao Bao particularly enjoyable is the freedom to customize your hot pot exactly to your preference. You select your preferred soup base (I went with a spicy Sichuan broth that had the perfect level of heat), and then simply pick whatever ingredients appeal to you as they rotate past. There’s no waiting for servers or having to compromise with dining companions on ingredient choices - everyone gets exactly what they want.
The system is cleverly designed for efficiency. Each seat has its own heating element to keep your personal hot pot at the perfect temperature, and there are small dishes of various sauces and condiments to create your ideal dipping blend. The rotating belt ensures that ingredients are constantly refreshed, and the staff is vigilant about maintaining cleanliness and food safety.
Despite being a buffet concept, the atmosphere doesn’t feel rushed or chaotic. The restaurant has a modern, vibrant ambiance with comfortable seating and good spacing between tables. The unique numbered seating system makes it easy for staff to bring any special orders directly to you.
For the quality and quantity of food available, Dragon Bao Bao Rotating Mini Hot Pot offers exceptional value. It’s rare to find such an interactive, customizable dining experience at such an affordable price point. Whether you’re a hot pot aficionado or new to this style of dining, this restaurant offers a fun, delicious, and surprisingly economical meal that I highly recommend.

Madang Korean Restaurant
Today I visited Madang Korean Restaurant, an upscale dining establishment uniquely situated within a golf playground. This restaurant offers an authentic Korean culinary experience in a refined setting.
The meal began with an impressive array of banchan (side dishes) that showcased traditional Korean flavors - kimchi, pickled vegetables, and various small bites that prepare the palate for the main courses. The attention to detail in these small dishes was a promising indication of what was to come.
We ordered a variety of classic Korean dishes, including a bubbling hot pot filled with rice cakes, vegetables, and eggs, as well as perfectly fried Korean chicken with various coatings. The restaurant also offers premium cuts of meat for tabletop grilling, beautifully presented and accompanied by fresh vegetables and dipping sauces.
One of the highlights was the bingsoo (Korean shaved ice dessert) topped with sweet red beans and condensed milk - a refreshing conclusion to a flavorful meal. The restaurant also takes pride in their presentation, with gold utensils adding a touch of luxury to the dining experience.
The restaurant’s location within a golf playground creates a unique atmosphere, combining the tranquility of the surroundings with the lively experience of Korean dining. The interior features elegant dark tables and traditional Korean design elements, creating an ambiance that balances authenticity with sophistication.
While Madang is certainly positioned in the higher price bracket for Korean cuisine, the quality of ingredients, generous portions, and exceptional preparation justify the expense. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking an authentic yet elevated Korean dining experience or for special occasions when you want to impress guests with something beyond the ordinary.
For lovers of Korean cuisine who appreciate quality and are willing to pay a premium for it, Madang offers a dining experience that satisfies both culinary expectations and the desire for an elegant setting.

Din Tai Fung at Galleria Mall
Today I visited Din Tai Fung, the world-renowned Taiwanese restaurant chain that recently opened its branch at Galleria Mall. This restaurant has built its reputation on exquisite dim sum, particularly their meticulously crafted xiaolongbao (soup dumplings).
The moment you enter, you can tell this isn’t your average Chinese restaurant. The sleek, modern interior and open kitchen concept where you can watch the chefs expertly fold dumplings with precisely 18 pleats (their signature standard) sets the tone for a premium dining experience.
The menu offers a comprehensive selection of authentic Chinese dishes. We ordered their famous xiaolongbao, which arrived in a traditional bamboo steamer, alongside spicy wontons, fried rice, sautéed vegetables, and dan dan noodles. Each dish was impeccably prepared and presented, showcasing why Din Tai Fung has earned Michelin stars at some of its locations worldwide.
The xiaolongbao deserves special mention - these delicate soup-filled dumplings were perfectly thin-skinned with a rich, flavorful broth inside. The technique for eating them properly (placing them on your spoon, nibbling the skin to release the soup, then enjoying the rest) is part of the unique dining experience.
While Din Tai Fung is undeniably on the expensive side for Chinese cuisine, the quality justifies the price. The precision in preparation, freshness of ingredients, and consistency across dishes demonstrate why this restaurant has gained such international acclaim. The service was attentive and efficient, enhancing the overall experience.
For those looking to experience authentic, high-quality Chinese cuisine in an elegant setting, Din Tai Fung at Galleria Mall delivers a memorable dining experience well worth the splurge.

Al Farah Restaurant
Today I visited Al Farah, an authentic local Arab restaurant that proved to be an excellent choice for treating friends to genuine regional cuisine. This hidden gem offers a perfect opportunity to experience traditional Arab hospitality and flavors.
The spread at Al Farah is truly impressive, with a wide variety of classic Middle Eastern dishes served family-style. The table was filled with an abundance of dishes including succulent lamb with rice, various grilled meats, fresh salads, creamy hummus, and other traditional mezze. The presentation was both appetizing and authentic.
What makes Al Farah particularly special is how well it represents local culinary traditions. The meat dishes were tender and flavorful, slow-cooked to perfection with aromatic spices that permeated every bite. The mezze selection offered a delightful variety of textures and flavors, from tangy to rich and creamy.
The atmosphere at Al Farah enhances the dining experience, with traditional decor and attentive service that makes guests feel welcome. The restaurant strikes that perfect balance between casual comfort and quality dining, making it an ideal spot for both special occasions and friendly gatherings.
For visitors wanting to introduce friends to authentic Arab cuisine, Al Farah is definitely a standout choice. The generous portions, reasonable prices, and genuine flavors make it a restaurant that showcases the best of local culinary traditions. It’s the kind of place where you can truly experience the rich food culture of the region without pretense or tourist trappings.

Kuya Juan Restaurant
I visited Kuya Juan Restaurant on a Saturday afternoon, drawn by their special weekend offering - a Filipino buffet featuring lechon (roasted pork). This restaurant is particularly notable for only serving this specialty buffet on Saturday noon, making it a sought-after weekend destination.
The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the lechon - crispy, golden-brown pork that was freshly carved at the buffet station. The skin was delightfully crunchy while the meat underneath remained juicy and flavorful. It definitely stood out as the star of the spread, living up to its reputation.
The buffet also offered a variety of other Filipino dishes, though most were on the sweeter side compared to what I typically prefer. Many of the sauces and marinades had that characteristic Filipino sweetness, which might be perfect for those who enjoy sweeter flavor profiles in savory dishes.
What sets Kuya Juan apart from other buffet experiences is its lively atmosphere. The restaurant features live music with a singer performing during the meal, creating a festive dining environment. The dining room has rustic charm with exposed brick ceilings, wooden furnishings, and decorative elements that reflect Filipino culture.
Overall, Kuya Juan offers a unique dining experience that’s worth trying, especially if you’re a fan of Filipino cuisine or looking to try authentic lechon. While not every dish hit the mark for me (some were a bit too sweet for my taste), the crispy pork alone justifies the visit. Just remember to plan ahead - if you want to experience their famous lechon buffet, Saturday noon is your only opportunity!

Belgian Cafe in Abu Dhabi
Today I visited Belgian Cafe, a German-inspired restaurant in Abu Dhabi. While the restaurant is famous for its extensive beer selection, I opted to focus on their food offerings instead of the beverages.
The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the “Pork Festival” platter - a generous assortment featuring succulent ribs, crispy bacon, and flavorful sausages, among other pork delicacies. This combination plate offered an excellent variety of flavors and textures.
The restaurant has a cozy European pub atmosphere, with wooden furnishings and traditional decor that transports you to a classic Belgian brasserie.
Each item on the platter was prepared to perfection - the ribs were tender and fell right off the bone, the bacon was just the right balance of crispy and chewy, and the sausages had that authentic snap when bitten into.
For those looking to enjoy pork dishes in Abu Dhabi (which can be somewhat challenging to find), Belgian Cafe is absolutely worth a visit. The portion sizes are generous, making it great value for money, and the quality of the food makes for a truly enjoyable dining experience.
Overall, Belgian Cafe offers a wonderful taste of European cuisine right here in Abu Dhabi. Despite not partaking in their beer offerings, the food alone makes this restaurant a standout choice that I would happily recommend.
